PINT events

We have lots of events at The Making House and during October and November our events will be part of PINT, Burton on Trent’s first Arts Festival 

Our events for PINT will be:

The Making House Swish

Thursday 18th October 6-9pm

£5, Your entry fee, includes the swish, a free glass of wine and light snacks and pampering sessions.

An opportunity for you to swap your quality clothes and accessories for someone else’s to create a new and different look. Expert advice will be on hand to suggest ways you could adapt pieces.  Throughout the evening there will be pampering sessions for you to enjoy. And as always there’s some great art and craft on display too.

Sunday Brunch at The Making House

Sunday 28th October, 12-4pm

Join us for The Making House preview of our exhibition of PINT artists including the window installation by Steffie Richards, whilst having a chilled Sunday afternoon listening to the music of Romance in Durango. You can’t beat a Sunday brunch so we’ll have traditional and veggie breakfast snacks, teas and coffee and can always supply a hair of dog if necessary! Our shop will also be open where you’ll find a selection of unique contemporary craft.

The Pint exhibition will run at The Making House from 26th October to 27th November; our normal opening hours are Fridays and Saturday 10-5 , but we’ll also be open Tues 30th, Wed 31st October and Thursday 1st November especially for PINT.

Halloween Drop In Workshop

Wednesday 31st October, 12-5pm, 6.30 – 8.30pm

Free if you leave the pumpkin for display, £3 to take away.

Drop in and make alternative plastic bag pumpkins throughout the afternoon. Drop by in the evening and join us for some warming pumpkin soup and maybe make an alternative pumpkin too. The activity is suitable for all ages. See Steffie Richard’s window lit up to its best effect and view the PINT exhibition and our shop, of course!

The Making House Craft Club Launch

Upcycled Purse and Phone case drop in workshop, free

Friday 2nd Nov, 10 -2pm

Joelle our sewing expert will help you to upcycle old ties and jeans in to purses or phone covers. Suitable for young and old.

Our craft club will run on Friday mornings 10.30 – 1pm, it’s an opportunity for crafters to meet, bring along work, share ideas and chat. Price £5, with that you get as much tea and coffee as you’d like, cake and once a month we’ll do a tutored session (£5 to regular craft clubbers, normal full price £20)

Secret Santa preview and drinks

Friday 30th November, 6- 9pm

For our xmas exhibition We’re taking a break from our normal exhibition programme where we focus on the work of an up and coming maker and will be focusing on affordable unique gifts instead. Our main exhibition will be Secret Santa….all work will be priced at £10 or under, the perfect opportunity to get unique gifts. We’ll also have a window advent calendar display of 24 unique handmade lanterns.

Join us for traditional mulled wine and mince pies to mark the opening of our exhibition and the advent run down to xmas. The exhibition will run until xmas, normal opening Fridays and Saturdays 10 -5, with extra evening opening on Tuesdays until 9pm.

One World Week Fair Trade Event

Saturday 13th October, 3-6pm

The Meadowside

One Word Week (Burton) seeks to promote harmony and respect among people in the local area and around the world.

We are organising a One World Week event at Studio ‘B’ in the Meadowside Leisure Centre Burton upon Trent DE14 1LT. It will include speakers from a variety of faiths, tables set out for local charities to display their work, raise awareness and support.  We hope that this will also be a significant networking event, bringing together people working for others at home and abroad. We are particularly focusing on the amazing number of Burton and surrounding area based, organisations offering overseas support and aid and hope to bring them together for their mutual benefit. Also included are several which provide much needed help and support at home.

There will be entertainments of various sorts to attract more people into the event, just 5-10 minute slots of song, dance, storytelling, whatever you have to offer, particularly with an overseas flavour.

There will also be a free vegetarian/Halal/standard buffet available.

Introduction to Machine Embroidery with Joelle Harris

Tuesday 16th October 10-1pm (£30) 10-3 (£45)

Freehand machine embroidery basics, come along and try this exciting way to create beautiful textiles. You will get to make and takeaway some great creations. No experience needed.

Pulpwork Gifts Workshop with Anna Roebuck

Saturday 3rd November, 10-4pm

£50, including a homemade vegetarian lunch.

This is an incredibly versatile, cheap and easy medium to us. Create bowls, mirrors or decorative items using recycled paper pulp; it can even be used for practical projects too. Tutor, Anna Roebuck, trained in Fine Art textiles, specialising in papermaking, felt and installation sculpture; from there she’s been developing ideas for using paper pulp (and other recycled materials) since starting her first business ‘Pulpwork’ in the early 90’s. Whilst this is a fairly simple technique, Anna will share with you lots of tips, shortcuts and ideas so you can use this medium to its best potential.

You could use the opportunity to create a number of xmas gifts during this full day workshop.

Plastic Fantastic Workshop with Anna Roebuck

Saturday 10th November, 10-4pm

£60, including a homemade vegetarian lunch.

You will be taught the basics of plastic fusion allowing you to transform plastic bags in to exciting new things, from collage and wall hangings to bags, notebook covers and basic jewellery.

You will be working with Anna Roebuck who set up her business bags2riches in 2001 with the aim of creating desirable objects from everyday waste. Since then she has become an expert in using waste plastic along with other recycled materials creating contemporary jewellery, lighting and artwork. Anna has exhibited and delivered projects all around the country and now works with a Fair Trade organisation in Mumbai to produce her jewellery, selling through outlets such as Oxfam.

Please bring along old plastic carrier bags, bubble wrap, fruit nets and any other polythene to recycle.

Green xmas crafts 4 week course with Anna Roebuck

Starts Tuesday 20th November,  7-9pm

£60 for the 4 week course.

Anna will share with you lots of ideas for making xmas gifts, cards and decorations using recycled and sustainable materials. As pasrt of this series of fun workshops you’ll get to explore various craft techniques, so why not MIY for xmas instead of buy.

Tea Cup and Sand Candles Workshop with Anna Roebuck

Saturday 24th November, 10-4pm

£50, including a homemade vegetarian lunch.

Tea cup candles make a really popular gift. In the morning you’ll be shown how to produce candles using recycled/soy wax in a variety of containers. You’ll also be shown a few other basic candlemaking techniques including making sand candles. You’ll then have the rest of the day to create as many candles as you can make.

We’ll have a few vintage cups and saucers for you to buy, but we recommend you bring along a selection of containers with you.
